ABSTRACT:
It is a general misconception that Christianity came to India with the advent of the British rule. As a matter of fact, the history of Christianity in India can be traced as far back as the history of Christianity itself. It was brought to India by Saint Thomas in the 1st century A.D. Since then the feet of Christianity kept spreading. Raipur district at the heart of Madhya Pradesh, however, tasted the Christian impact at quite a later date. In the year 1868 Rev. Osear Lohr, a Christian Missionary, opted to work here and opened his first mission centre. That was the humble beginning of missionary activities here. An interesting fact is that four Mission groups are active in the area, viz., Church of Northan India, Catholic Church, Mennonite Church in India and General Conference Mennonite Church in India. Their programmes are almost similar but they have divided the areas. The present study attempts to survey their .history and development.
