ABSTRACT:
Any language which has a definite orthographic system affects the linguistic ability or ils learner. But the spelling system of tunguage which is effectively away from its pronunciation system poses problems 10 the mother-tongue speakers and also to other language learners. A language learner when he is learning English, faces many difficulties. The difficulties become manifold when a person learns English as L2. He is conditioned dominantly by his momcnongue lo such an extent that any deviation from it creates many errors in learning the other language. In this study Oriya Speakers have been taken into consideration lo find out what type of difficulties in spelling (of words) they Iace when learning English as L2. Here we have tried to locate those areas which create problems for Oriya Speakers when they learn English. Some remedial points have also been suggested in This aspect of the problem, this study can also be helpful to improve the learning and teaching strategics of English as a second language in Orissa Stale.
