ABSTRACT:
The Covid-19 pandemic has accelerated the adoption of mobile banking in rural areas, transforming it from convenient to necessary. This review synthesizes the recent literature on mobile banking adoption in rural regions, focusing on the post-pandemic period. These studies consistently highlight a significant increase in mobile banking transactions driven by movement restrictions and the need for contactless financial services. However, this review also identifies critical barriers to adoption, including limited trust in digital platforms, low levels of digital literacy, and inadequate infrastructure. To address these challenges, financial institutions and policymakers have implemented strategies, such as enhancing cybersecurity measures, providing digital education programs, and expanding agent banking networks. The review also reveals that younger populations and women face unique challenges and opportunities to adopt mobile banking. While youth act as digital champions within their households, women often encounter additional barriers related to phone ownership, cultural norms, and lower literacy levels. The synthesis concludes by emphasizing the need for longitudinal and geographically diverse research, as well as targeted interventions to engage underrepresented groups, such as the elderly and marginalized populations. Achieving inclusive financial access in rural areas post-Covid-19 will require sustained collaboration among policymakers, financial institutions, and development partners to invest in digital infrastructure, education, and culturally relevant services.
