Abstract. The whole Study based on PhD thesis (research output) of library and information science in Guru Ghasidas Central University Bilaspur Chhattisgarh during 1991-2020 by the supervisor, topic, year and, subject wise distribution of research output. To know the current research trends of LIS, there. It was established as a central university in Chhattisgarh Bilaspur in June 1983, Through the Central Universities Act 2009; Undergraduate, postgraduate and Ph.D. courses of Library and Information Science operate there. A total of 27 research PhD (thesis) has been done in libraries and information science in here. In which the maximum 12 has been done in 2002,2004,2009,2014. The current trend of library and information science is Information seeking behavior, user study and Public Library. Year wise most 9 were done in 2001-2005.. And subject wise maximum 12  has been done on Information Seeking behavior (User Study), Public Library.  supervisor wise distribution of most 14 PhD thesis done under the supervision of Dr. Brajesh Tiwari. in which the study problem of the researcher is related to more than one subject. The above study highlights the research activities in LIS.

Introduction

Curiosity is the basic instinct of humans. Library research is a systematic effort to acquire knowledge. Library research is needed to increase its quality in the activities of the library to achieve and provide continuous service. In this study we analyzed the Ph- D. thesis (research output) of library and information science in Guru Ghasidas Central University Chhattisgarh during 1991-2020 by the supervisor, year and subject. To know the current research trends of LIS. Guru Ghasidas University is a central university in India. It was established in Chhattisgarh Bilaspur in June 1983, Through the Central Universities Act 2009; it was established as a Central University. Undergraduate, postgraduate and Ph.D. courses of Library and Information Science operate there. 

Review of Literature :         

Chatterjee, Amitabh. et.al (1995). analyzed the research trends in Library and Information science in India from 1950 to 1985. The study resulted in very few doctoral theses being awarded till 1982. Only 28 Degrees were awarded in 33 years. No doctoral degree was awarded during 1951-1956 and 1958-1962.It is shown to be the most popular research area in the field of the Library movement.

Mittal, Rekha. (2011). used co-word analysis to identify the frequency of occurrence and analysis of co-occurrence 1408 articles indexed in the Library and Information science (Lisa) database. The result of the study indicated that the library practice, user services, cataloging, user studies, university libraries, public libraries, information retrieval, library education, citation analysis, bibliometrics are the major areas of research in the field of Library and Information science.

Maity, Bapan Kumar & Sudip Ranjan Hatua (2015). analyzed the research trends of Library management in LIS carried out in India during 1950-2012. 1058 doctoral theses have been submitted in various universities during 1950-2012. The result found that the first three decades (1950-1970) are marked with the slow progress of Ph-D. Degrees awarded in India. Maximum theses i.e. 537 were awarded in the period 1990-1999.

Dora, Mallikarjun and H. Anil Kumar (2017). aims to understand the research trends in the field of LIS in India from 2004 to 2015. The sample of the study consists of 3713 journals published in 14 Indian journals. The result indicated that the lowest no. of the article i.e. 200 published in the year 2005 and the highest no of article is published in the year 2013.The burst detection technique was adopted to identify the popular themes in LIS research at different points in time.

Chatha, Singh, Harmandeep. (2016). To know the research trend analysis of LIS during 2011-2015 year-wise distribution of articles and authors cited documents and authors state-wise distribution authorship subject-wise distribution  80 written paper used by data collection Karnataka is the top in-state wise authorship and subject wise distribution of research article is,  bibliometric study.

Objectives :

1.     To know the current trend in LIS research PhD (thesis) inGuru Ghasidas Central University Bilaspur Chhattisgarh during 1991-2020.

2.     To analyze the subject areas of research in LIS of GGU during 1991-2020. 

3.     To study the total number of Research outputs in LIS of GGU during 1991-2020.

4.     To identify the subject wise distribution of Research output in LIS of GGU during 1991-2020. 

5.     To know the Year wise distribution of research output of LIS of GGU during 1991-2020.

6.     To know the supervisor wise distribution of research output of LIS in GGU during 1991-2020.

Methodology

This study is about  the research output (Ph-D Thesis) of Guru Ghasidas central university Bilaspur Chhattisgarh during 1991-2020. Data was collected from the department of the library and information science of GGU and Shodhganga. In this study, data has been presented with analytical methods. We presented the supervisor, scholar wise year, subject wise research output details  in table form and the graph chart figure.

Scope & limitation

Among various government and private universities of Chhattisgarh state, the study is limited to Guru Ghasidas central university bilaspur chhattisgarh. Among various types of library resources/collection, the study is limited to PhD. thesis. Total 27 PhD Thesis research has been analyzed during 1991 – 2020 in LIS.

Distribution of Research Output (Ph –D. Thesis) of GGU during 1991 – 2020

Table - 1 shows the Distribution of Research Output (Ph D Thesis) of Guru Ghasidas Central University Bilaspur Chhattisgarh. during 1994–2020. First PhD (thesis) research  done in  LIS was completed by Shri Ram Gopal Yadav in 1998 under the supervision of Dr. J. L. saini. In 2002, 2004, 2009, 2014, twelve PhD thesis research  were done. And in 1999, 2005, 2011, two  PhD thesis research  were done. One PhD thesis research  was done in 1998, 2003, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2010, 2017, 2019 and 2020. A total of 27 PhD thesis research was done there.

The Data Analysis of Table number 2 and Figure 1 which is related to subject wise distribution of research output of Guru Ghasidas Central University Bilaspur Chhattisgarh during 1991-2020. The highest PhD thesis research  done in both information seeking behavior (user study) and public library subject. followed by 4 PhD thesis Research  done In the Library management, 2 PhD thesis Research  done In the Library science and 1 PhD thesis Research  done In all the other subject areas i.e. scientometric study, university library, special library, library legislation, collection development, digital library, bibliographical database management system, application of koha software and information literacy etc.

The Data Analysis of Table number 3 and Figure 2 is related to the awarded year wise distribution of research output of Guru Ghasidas Central University Bilaspur Chhattisgarh during 1991-2020. The highest 9 research PhD (thesis) awarded in the year 2000-2005 followed by 7  awarded in the year 2006-2010, 5 awarded in the year 2011-2015 and 3 awarded in the year 1995-1996 and 2016-2020 etc.

Analysis of Table number 4 and figure number 3 shows that the highest 14 research PhD thesis were done under the supervision of Dr. Brajesh Tiwari in Guru Ghasidas Central University Bilaspur Chhattisgarh during 1991-2020, followed by 5 research PhD thesis done under both Dr. J.L. Saini and Dr. U N Singh, and 01 research PhD thesis done under the supervision of Dr. Brajesh Tiwari and Dr. R.K. Raut, Dr. U.N. Singh, Dr. H.N. Prasad, and Dr. U.N.Singh and R.K.Raut.

Finding : From Analysis of the study we got the following findings -

1.          First Ph.D. research PhD (thesis)in the field of library and information science in Guru Ghasidas central university bilaspur Chhattisgarh was done by Mr. Ramgopal Yadav in 1998.

2.          The subject wise research PhD thesis 12 done in both information seeking behavior (user study) and public library in LIS 2004,2004,2009,2014.

3.          The maximum 09 research PhD (thesis) awarded in the year 2001 - 2005 in the Guru Ghasidas central university, Bilaspur Chhattisgarh..

4.          The highest 14 research PhD thesis were done under the supervision of Dr. Brajesh Tiwari in LIS in GGU.chhattisgarh.

5.          Total 27 research PhD theses were done at GGU  Chhattisgarh during 1991-2020.

Conclusion

The present time is of interdisciplinary research. The current trend of library and information science is Information seeking behavior, user study and Public Library. in which the study problem of the researcher is related to more than one topic/subject. The above study highlights the research activities in the library and information science GGU Chhattisgarh. It is clear from the study of universities that research trends are increasing in the library and information science and efforts are being made to PhD (thesis) Research of LIS.
