Abstract: The present study is an attempt to find out the research trends in the field of Library and Information Science of Pt. Ravishankar Shukla University, Raipurchhattiagarh. The study was based on the Ph.D. thesis awarded in the field of  Library and Information Science between 1991 to 2020. This study was conducted to achieve following objectives like most working area of reaserch in this field, highest no. of thesis done under supervisor and highest research productivity between the year 2016 to 2020. In this context,  result found that out of 24 thesis majority of thesis i.e. 07 – 07 were awarded in the area of Bibliometric study and Information seeking behavior. Highest 10 doctoral thesisawarded under the supervision of Prof. A.K. Verma. followed by Prof. Maya Verma with 09 Thesis, Dr.Superna Sengupta with 03 thesis and Dr. Md Imtiaz Ahemed  with 02 thesis respectively. The highest research productivity was produced between the year 2016 to 2020.This study will  be beneficial for the future researcher to conduct their research.

Introduction

Library and Educational Institute are the two faces of a coin. They cannot survive without each other. It provides opportunities for people to use their leisure time to increase and upgrade their knowledge.  library is a very important institution because it is useful to teachers and researchers for research.

Research plays an important role in the expansion of knowledge and discoveries. It is a scientific program that tells us the relationship between cause and effect. In other words, Research is a systematic investigation to discover new facts and reach the conclusion. It demands accurate investigation and description. According to Francis Rummel “Research is a careful inquiry or examination to discover new information or relationships and to expand and to verify existing knowledge (Verma and Verma). Clifford Woody defines Research as comprises defining and redefining the problem, formulating hypothesis or suggested solutions; collecting, organizing and evaluating data; making deductions and research conclusions; and at last, carefully testing the conclusion to determine whether fits the formulating hypothesiss (Kothari).

Pt. Ravishankar Shukla University is one of the renowned and largest higher education institution which was founded in the year 1964. Presently there are 29 teaching departments running under this university. In which School of Studies Library & Information Science is running as an individual department. This department was started in the year 1971, Primarily only  B. Lib& I Sc course was running, in the year 1988 M. Lib & I Sc course was started and to promote research in the field of Library and information sciece Ph D degree is also being provided. First Ph D degree in was awarded in the year 1994 to Mrs. Maya Verma under the supervision of Prof. A.K. Varma.https://www.prsu.ac.in/academic-departments/utd-departments/School-of-Studies-in-Library-and-Information-Science/69

Review of Literature

Mittal, Rekha (2011). analyzed the research trends in Library and Information Science in India during the period January 1990 to June 2010. There are 1408 articles used for the study. The result indicated that open access, web 2.0, the World wide web, internet are some important areas that researchers are interested.

Singh, K.P. and Harish Chandar (2013). conducted a study to highlights the Publication trends of 336 articles published during the period 2006-2012 in the Library Management journal of emerald. The result found that the majority of contributions are the single author and most cited documents are journal articles. In the Institution wise distribution, the highest number of articles i.e.267 contributed by the Universities followed by the colleges/ Institution. The study is also found that the USA is the most productive country followed by Australia and UK.

Muhammad Anwar and Tang Zhiwei (2020). found the productivity of Indian authors to Library philosophy and practice from 2008-to 2013. The result revealed that the total number of papers that is 193 has been contributed to Library philosophy and practices, out of this maximum number of papers was published in 2013 with 31.08% and the least numbers of papers were published in 2009 with 6.73%. As per the Author’s collaboration, most papers were written by a single author that is 41.45%. S. Thanuslodi was identified as the most productive author with 9 research papers.

Hajarika, Parishmita (2021). investigated the Research productivity trends of DESIDOC Journal of Library and Information science between the period of 2011-2020. The result shows that in 2012, the Majority of articleswere published with the highest growth of 20.68%. The average Author frequency per paper was 1.94 for 588 Publication. The degree of collaboration was highest in 2018 at 0.75 and lowest at 0.53 in 2013.

Pandey, Rahul and Shikha Awasthi (2021).studied the Research publication pattern of journal of Indian Library Association (JILA): A Bibliometric analysis during 2015-2019. The study resultedthat total 107 research papers have been published between the period of 2015 to 2019. The highest 26.16% papers published in the year 2019 whereas the lowest no. of papers that is 15.59% were published in 2016. Out of 107 papers, 51 were published by single author and 52 by double authors. The highest and lowest degree of freedom found in the year 2017 is 0.60 and in the year 2019 that is 0.52.

Objective

The objective of the study is as follows

1.     To illustrate the distribution of research output during 1991-2020.

2.     To ascertain the subject wise distribution of thesis.

3.     To ascertain the decade wise distribution of thesis.

4.     To know the supervisor wise distribution of thesis.
