Use of E- Resources by College Students of Arts, Social Science and Science Stream of Raipur city: A Comparative Study

Abstract. The major objective of this study to compare the use of e -resources by students from Arts, Social Science and Science stream and compare preferences of  the Use  of e - resources  by students of Arts, Social Science and Science stream of Raipur city. The study was based on survey method. Among various techniques of Survey Method, Questionnaire Technique was used for the study. Accordingly a Self structured questionnaire was designed to collect data from the regular UG and P G students of various college of Raipur city. The major findings of the study shows that The calculated value is c2 (df=2) = 5.32 and Table value is 5.991 so Ho Hypothesis is Accepted and Ha Hypothesis is rejected it means there are no Significant difference in Use of e - journals between Students of Arts, social Science and Science Stream. and e -book was found to be the most preferred e-resource by students of Arts, Social Science and Science students of Raipur city.

INTRODUCTION

Normally any kind of material which fulfills our needs is called resources. In the library, books are such kinds of resources that fulfill our information needs. we know that reading is the foremost part of the students.  In this context E – resources are the very important and helpful reading materials in pandemic situation for college students because this supports their reading, learning, seminar presentation, preparation of project work and research activities etc. This means that present e - resources are boon for students and it gives a boost to them. e - Resources are such kinds of resources which are available online and offline in the electronic form such as e -Book, e - journal, e - News clipping, e -research report and online database. etc. The Characteristic of e - resources are that it is available on web in E- form which can be accessed anywhere from any places in the world.

 

OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

1.     To Know the Types of e – resources used by College students of Arts, Social Science and Science stream of Raipur city.

2.     To identify most important e – resources usually used by college students of Arts, Social Science and Science stream of Raipur city.

3.     To compare use of e-resources by students from Arts, Social Science and Science stream of Raipur city.

4.     To Know & compare preferences of Use of e- resources by students of Arts, Social Science and Science stream of Raipur city.

 

HYPOTHESIS

Ho =   There are no significant difference will be Use of e – book, e– Journals, e - Magazine, e –  

            Research report, e– encyclopaedia,  e- newspaper and e- bibliography   between students of

           Arts,  Social Science and Science Stream.

Ha =   There are significant difference will be observed in Use of e – book, e – Journals, e -

           Magazine, e – Research report, e – encyclopaedia, e - newspaper and e- bibliography  

           Between student of Arts, Social Science and Science Stream.

 

REVIEW OF LITERATURES

Rajunaik, S. and Naik, Ramesh R. (2017). In her study found that 64% of the faculty members, 89% of the research scholars and 63% of the students know about the e-resources through E-mail notification from Library. 36% of the faculty members and 89% of the students know the method used to access e-resources through course offered by the Institute, while 84% of research scholars know about the method used to access e-resources through Guidance of the teachers and the supervisors. It is also observed that 79% of the faculty members take a printout to read followed by 28% of the research scholar and 88% of the students read online.

Vilgi, K.S. and Shibu Ray, S. (2018). Studied the use of e-resources by the students and faculty members of federal Institute of science and technology (FISAT), Kerala: A case study. The study revealed that the majority of 45.67 % of the respondents prefer both print and electronic formats. 34.41% of the respondents use e-resources every day. E-journals are the most used type of e-resources by them. Access time to slow is the main constraint in its use.

Patel, Adam Burhansab, M. Sadik Batcha and Muneer Ahmad (2020). Investigate the awareness and usage of electronic resources by library users of selected colleges of Solapur University. The result revealed that 48.69% of the respondents visited the library daily. 59.57% of respondents spent less than an hour in the Library. It is also observed that 24.7% of the respondents from aided colleges know about services of the Library from the website but 85% of the self-finance colleges and 56.4% of the respondents from the Pharmacy colleges know about services from their friends.

Shahnaz, P. and P. Balasubramanian (2021). conducted a study on access level and utilization of e-resources in the University Libraries of Tamilnadu. The major findings of the study are out of 574, 24.91% of respondents visited Library Twice a week. 37.80% of the respondents use the library for their research work. It is also found that research scholars are highly satisfied with the availability of e-resources followed by Non-teaching staff, Teachers and students.

SCOPE AND LIMITATIONS

Present Study  is confined to the use of e- resources by the College Students of Arts Social Science and Science stream of Raipur city of 11 Colleges Which is Chhattisgarh Autonomous College Raipur; Durga College, Raipur; Govt D.B. Girls College Raipur; Arts and Commerce Girls College, Raipur; Dr. Radha Bai Navin Kanya College Mathapara , Raipur; Smt. Pramila Gokul Das Daga Girls College, Raipur; St. Vicent paloty College, Raipur; Disha College , Raipur; Shantiniketan College Changorabhatha Raipur and Vipra Arts Commerce and Physical Education College, Raipur, The different  limitations of the study are -

a)     The study is confined to the College of Raipur city, (Chhattisgarh).

b)     The study confined among regular UG and PG College students of Raipur city only.

c)     The study is confined to the use of e - resources by the regular UG and PG College students only   and not any other.

 

METHODOLOGY

The study was based on survey method. Among various techniques of Survey Method, Questionnaire Technique was used for the study. Accordingly a Self structured questionnaire was designed to collect data from the regular UG and PG students of various college of Raipur (Chhattisgarh) under the scope of the study, keeping in mind the basic objectives of the study. The entire population i.e. regular UG and PG students were taken as sample for the study which was 3603 in numbers.

 

DATA ANALYSIS

A structured questionnaire was prepared and was distributed to 3603 Students of various stream and various college of Raipur (Chhattisgarh) who were physically available in the colleges. Out of 3603 Students, 2702 students with the filled in questionnaires (75%) Hence in all cases the total number of respondents for the present study was 2702.The collected data were analyzed with the help of c2 statistical techniques.

 

Table -1 shows use of e - books by students from Arts, Social Science and Science streams.

A perusal of entries depicted in table 1 regarding use of e - books by students from different educational streams i.e. Arts, Social Science and Science respectively reveal that 60.45% students from arts, 66.36% from Social Science and 69.69% from Science stream use e - book. 39.55% students from Arts, 33.64% from Social Science and 30.31% from Science stream gave their response in negative when asked to give their response on use of e - book is concerned.

For comparative purpose  the calculated value is c2 (df=2) = 6.81and Table value is 5.991 so Ho Hypothesis is rejected and Ha Hypothesis is Accepted it means Significant difference in Use of e - books between Students of Arts, social Science and Science Stream. As a result the reveal that use of e - book is significantly higher in students of Science as compared to Arts and Social Science students respectively. 

 

Table -2 shows use of E- journals by students from Arts, Social Science and Science Stream.

A perusal of entries depicted in table 2 regarding use of e - journals by students from different educational streams i.e. Arts, Social Science and Science respectively reveal that 29.85% students from arts, 30.58% from Social Science and 34.72% from Science stream use e - journals while 70.15% students from Arts, 69.42% from Social Science and 65.28% from Science Stream responded that they do not use e - journals. Data also reveal that Use of e - journals are relatively less by students of all three streams i.e. Arts, Social Science and Science respectively.

 

  The Calculated value is c2 (df=2) = 5.32 and Table value is 5.991 so Ho Hypothesis is Accepted and Ha Hypothesis is rejected it means there are no Significant difference in Use of e - journals between Students of Arts, social Science and Science Stream.

 

Table -3 shows Use of e -magazines by students from Arts, Social Science and Science stream.

A perusal of entries depicted in table 3 regarding use of e -magazine by students from different educational streams i.e. Arts, Social Science and Science respectively reveal that 36.57% students from arts, 33.44% from social science and 14.55%  from Science stream responded that they use  e -magazine. On the other hand, 63.43% students from Arts, 66.56% from Social Science and 85.45% from Science stream gave their response in negative when asked to give their response on use of e -magazine is concerned.

  The calculated value is c2 (df=2) = 139.91and Table value is 5.991 so Ho Hypothesis is rejected and Ha Hypothesis is Accepted it means there are Significant difference in Use of e - Magazine between Students of Arts, social Science and Science Stream. As a result the reveal that use of e -magazine is significantly higher in students of arts Stream as compared to Social Science and Science students respectively. 

Table - 4 shows Use of e -research report by students from Arts, Social Science and Science Stream.

A perusal of entries depicted regarding use of e -research report by students from different educational streams i.e. Arts, Social Science and Science respectively reveal that 18.65% students from arts, 25.07% from Social Science and 28.42% from Science stream responded that they use e - research report. On the other hand, 81.35% students from arts, 74.93% from Social Science and 71.58% from Science stream gave their response in negative when asked to give their response on use of e - research report is concerned.

  The calculated value is c2 (df=2) = 8.14 and Table value is 5.991 so Ho Hypothesis is rejected and Ha Hypothesis is Accepted it means there are Significant difference in Use of e - research report between Students of Arts, social Science and Science Stream.  Hence use of e -research report is highest in students of Science streams as Compared Arts and Social Science Students respectively at .05 level of significant.

 

Table -5 shows use of e - encyclopaedia by students from Arts, Social Science and Science stream.

A perusal of entries depicted in table 5 regarding use of e - encyclopaedia by students from different educational streams i.e. Arts, Social Science and Science respectively reveal that 33.58% students from arts, 27.32%  from Social Science and 15.63% from Science stream responded that they use e -encyclopaedia  as resources. On the other hand 66.42% students from Arts, 72.68% student from Social Science and 84.37% from science stream gave their response in negative about using e - encyclopaedia.

The calculated value is c2 (df=2) = 64.46 and Table value is 5.991 so Ho Hypothesis is rejected and Ha Hypothesis is Accepted it means there are Significant difference in Use of e - encyclopaedia between Students of Arts, social Science and Science Stream.  Hence use of e -encyclopaedia is highest in students of arts streams followed by students from social science and least by science stream respectively.

Table - 6 shows use of e -newspaper by students from Arts, Social Science and Science stream.

A perusal of entries depicted in table 6 regarding use of e -newspaper by students from different educational streams i.e. Arts, Social Science and Science respectively reveal that 55.23% students from arts, 52.40% from Social Science and 30.87% from Science stream responded that they use e - newspaper as resources. On the other hand 44.77% students from Arts, 47.60% from Social Science and 69.13% students from science stream gave their response in negative about using e - newspaper.

The calculated value is c2 (df=2) = 130.89 and Table value is 5.991 so Ho Hypothesis is rejected and Ha Hypothesis is Accepted it means there are Significant difference in Use of e - newspaper between Students of Arts, social Science and Science Stream.  Hence use of e - newspaper is highest in students of arts streams followed by students from Social Science and least by Science stream respectively.

     

Table 7 shows use of e - bibliography by students from Arts, Social Science and Science Stream.

A perusal of entries depicted in table 7 regarding use of e - bibliography by students from different educational streams i.e. Arts, Social Science and Science respectively reveal that 31.35% students from arts, 14.27% from Social Science and 4.66% from Science stream use E- bibliography. While 68.65% students from Arts, 85.73% from Social Science and 95.34% from Science stream gave their response in negative when asked to give their response on use of e -bibliography is concerned.

The calculated value is c2 (df=2) = 143.87 and Table value is 5.991 so Ho Hypothesis is rejected and Ha Hypothesis is Accepted it means there are Significant difference in Use of e -bibliography  newspaper between Students of Arts, social Science and Science Stream.  Hence use of e - bibliography is highest in students of arts streams followed by students from social science and least by science stream respectively.

After comparatively analysing the e-resources used by students from Arts, Social Science and Science student, researcher ascertains preference for e - resources used by students from Arts, Social Science and Science stream.

     In table 8 preferences of students from Arts, Social Science and Science for use of different types of E- resources.

   Perusal of table 8 reveals the multiple preferences given by students of Arts stream that is first preference in terms of e-resource is e -book and followed by e-newspaper, e-magazine, e-encyclopedia, e-bibliography, e-journals and e-research report respectively in descending order. Whereas by students of Social Science stream reveal that their first preference in terms of e-resource is e -book and followed by e-newspaper, e-magazine, e- journals, e- encyclopedia e- research report, and e-bibliography  respectively in descending order. And by students of science stream reveal that their first preference in terms of e-resource is e-book and followed by e-journals, e-newspaper, e-research report, e-encyclopedia, e-magazine and e-bibliography respectively in descending order.

    As a result found from table 8 that is E-book is the most preferred e-resource by students of Arts, Social Science and Science. Apart from this preference for other resources namely - e- Journals, e-magazine, e-research report, e-encyclopaedia, e-Newspaper, and e- bibliography did differ between students of difference educational streams such as Arts, Social Science and Science.

 

  FINDING

1.     As a result the reveal that use of e- book is significantly higher in students of Science as

a.      Compared to Arts and Social Science students respectively. 

2.     The calculated value is c2 (df=2) = 5.32 and Table value is 5.991 so Ho Hypothesis is Accepted and Ha Hypothesis is rejected it means there are no Significant difference in    Use of e- journals between Students of Arts, social Science and Science Stream.

3.     Use of e-magazine is significantly higher in students of arts Stream as compared to Social Science and Science students respectively. 

4.     use of e-research report is highest in students of Science streams as Compared Arts and

a.      Social Science Students respectively at .05 level of significant.

5.     use of e-encyclopaedia is highest in students of arts streams followed by students from

                 i.     Social science and least by science stream respectively.

6.     There are significant difference in Use of e- newspaper between Students of Arts, Social Science and Science Stream.  Hence use of e- newspaper is highest in students of arts streams followed by students from social science and least by science stream respectively.

7.     Use of e- newspaper is highest in students of arts streams followed by students from social science and least by science stream respectively.

8.     e-book was found to be the most preferred e-resource by students of Arts, Social Science and Science students. Apart from this preference for other resources namely e-journals, e-magazine, e-research report, e-encyclopedia, e-newspaper, and e-bibliography the use did differ between students of difference educational streams such as Arts, Social Science and Science.

 

SUGGESTION

1.     The college Authority and Librarian should conduct user awareness and training programme on e - resources Access.

2.     Should be wi fi facilities in the college campus for students.

3.     To develop infrastructure facilities in the all department of College.

4.     Library budget should be sufficient for the e - resource collection development.

 

CONCLUSION

On the basis of finding concluded that use of E-resources like e - book, e - journals and e -research report respectively was found to be in higher magnitude in students of Science stream as compared to arts and Social Science stream. whereas use of e - resources like e -magazine, e - encyclopedia, e - newspaper and e - bibliography respectively was found to be in higher magnitude in students of arts stream as compared to Social Science and Science stream of Raipur city. No Significant difference in Use of e - journals between Students of Arts, Social Science and Science Stream. Further concluded that apart from e - book the preference to use e - resources namely e - journals, e - magazine, e - research report, e -encyclopedia, e -newspaper, and e - bibliography respectively was different in students of various Streams namely Arts, Social Science and Science.  Hence overall it may be concluded that educational Stream of which student is Pursuing study affect their use and preference related to E-resources.
