Abstract: India's age old contact with the Muslim
world was bound to influence the Indian society and vice versa. The Muslim
communities in India are based on Hindu pattern, i.e. occupational classes and
communities. In Chattisgarh there are a number of community groups of Muslims.
They are named after their trade such as Bhishti community consists of water
carriers, meat chopper and sellers are called Kasais, dyers are called Rangrez
etc. All these communities are self-sufficient and confined to their narrow
shells. This paper is entirely based on archival material as well as the
methodology of oral history.
